An accident in Delaware on Saturday night has left one elderly woman dead and an elderly man in critical condition.
According to police, Phyllis Kessler, 69, and Melvin Kessler, 76, both of Bear, had been travelling on Route 40 at the ramp to northbound Route 1 in Bear at approximately 10:22 p.m. The driver of a 2005 Ford Expedition ran a red light and crashed into the side of their car.
Phyllis Kessler was taken to Christiana Hospital where she died as a result of the injuries she sustained in the crash. Melvin Kessler was also taken to Christiana Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition.
Police have identified the driver of the Ford Expedition as Cristobal Guzman-Martinez, 30. Guzman-Martinez was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and walked away from the wreckage unscathed. Guzman-Martinez was later arrested at the scene of the crash on the charge of driving under the influence, vehicular homicide, vehicle assault, driving without a license and no proof of insurance.
